Iyon’s Festival of Lights

Philips has teamed up with french artist severine fontaine in the realization of an 80-meter long centerpiece for lyon’s festival of lights (from december 5 to 8, 2014) transforming the banks of the river rhône into a luminous landscape. powered by philips’ color kinetics LED connected lighting technology, ’incandescence’ features nine illuminated domes in the shape of incandescent bulbs, spanning the length of a football pitch. a dynamic show, lasting 6 minutes, explores the human race’s symbiotic relationship with light, using the iconic glass shape to represent the connection that humans have had historically with artificial light.

Adorable Book Sculpture of Matilda, The Roald Dahl Story

Su Blackwell, the London-based artist who we previously featured here and here, has just come out with a book sculpture and it’s absolutely adorable. Commissioned for a client whose mother was instrumental in bringing Matilda the Musical to the stage, this work is cut from pages of Roald Dah’s book and incorporates the illustration of Matilda by notable illustrator Quentin Blake. In it, you see Matlida standing on top of a large stack of books, reaching high in the sky for even more books. Love how she incorporates the trees and the lit house.

A painted canvas installation stretched to occupy the gallery space like a spider web. The vibrant, blue illustrations consists of abstract patterns as well as floral and animal motifs. The work extends outwards which gives the audience a feeling of being enveloped by the expanse. Interwoven into the dense installation are images of birds, foxes, and lizards as well as imaginary creatures.

Artist turns her New York home into a psychedelic retreat

Artist turns her New York home into a psychedelic retreat when American artist kat o’sullivan purchased a run-down 1840s residence in upstate new york, she planned for its total reconstruction into a psychedelic retreat, painted in a spectrum of rainbow hues and large-scale frescoes. Since then, she and partner mason brown have added oddly shaped windows, vibrantly colored exterior paneling and a pink front door to their home, transforming it into ‘calico’. black-painted trim gives the entire scheme a cartoon-like quality, as if torn from the pages of a comic magazine. a hand-painted mural illustrated near the roof draws out the shape of smiling mouth, while two adjacent window-frames serve as the eyes of the architectural face.

Italian street artist blu, likely best known for his complex graffiti animations, has transformed a former military warehouse in rome into an expansive and colorful mural, canvassing the building’s surface in over 25 unique faces.Nearly 50 windows spanning three storeys become the eyes of each quirky character, wrapping the porto fluviale — now a residential site — in an eclectic, rainbow range of painted personalities. banana-clad and leaf covered faces are etched onto the existing framework, canvassing the original architectural details. the vibrant spectrum of overlapping illustrations introduces a lively atmosphere to the street, where the daily routine of passers-by is interrupted by the unexpected introduction of public art.
